The engine activates when the battery's charge drops below 5% and the I3 functions like a regular hybrid consuming only gasoline. Most BMW I3's are full EV's but when equipped with the optional Range Extender it changes this car from a full electric to a hybrid. This makes the I3 the perfect around-town car with 114 Miles of full electric range and the additional 47 Miles of Gas Range.
